| Across the bay from Russell stands the pouwhenua (carved Māori totems marking places of significance), just across the bridge from the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. A treaty recognising Māori possession of land and other resources in return for New Zealand becoming a British colony was signed in Waitangi in 1840. |
