| The Surakhani region (where the Ateshgah is located) is one of Baku's central oil and gas repositories; the entire area is littered with oil derricks, gas pipelines, and nodding-donkey pumpjacks, mostly decaying remnants of the Soviet petrochemical industry inherited by Azerbaijan upon the break-up of the USSR. |
