| Mykines (the island) is a protected area for lundi ("puffin" in Faroese): Atlantslundi (the Atlantic puffin) in particular, with a population of 550,000 breeding pairs. Adults are marked by their black crown and back, contrasting white plumage, orange legs, and its boldly-marked red-and-black beak. They are usually monogamous with one mate a year, and can live up to 40 years. |
