The St. Sophia church: Sofia's second-oldest, after the St. George rotunda. It became a cathedral after Bulgaria separated from the Byzantine Empire (1185), lent its name to the city, was converted to a mosque by the Ottomans (16th-19th centuries), and has just been restored.
