At the end of the short valley connecting the old Stromness whaling station and Coronda peak is a waterfall; Shackleton used this in 1916 to descend down to Stromness, having crossed South Georgia from King Haakon Bay on the southern coast in a 36-hour journey to rescue shipmates back in Antarctica.
