| The most noteworthy grave in Grytviken cemetery is that of Sir Ernest Shackleton, the famous British polar explorer: he died on board his ship in 1922 in South Georgia. His widow decided he would prefer burial close to Antarctica, a feeling echoed by many of his colleagues. His grave points south, to Antarctica. |
