Churches formed the centre of villages in the Faroes as both a social and a religious centre; arrive in a town by sea, and the church will likely be the first sight. The Vikings brought their Norse partheon to the Faroes before eventually converting to Christianity, but after the Reformation of 1536, the Faroese faith became Lutheran.
