Pride of place at the rear is the first merkið (Faroese flag, right of picture), designed in 1919 by local resident Jens Olivur Lisberg (buried in the adjacent graveyard), and recognised as the country's flag in WWII by British occupying forces in 1940, then officially by Denmark on the granting of autonomy in 1948. |
